US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy R. Sherman expects the upcoming national elections to be free and fair. In response, I said, the election will be free and fair. But it depends on the party and the political person who will come or not in the election. In the present context, the political parties which lack the driving force and proper leadership cannot give proper explanation to the people. Bangladesh cannot give any guarantee about them.<\/p>\n

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam said these things in a briefing in the open conference room of his ministry on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The State Minister said that during the meeting with the US Deputy Secretary of State, he expected the National Assembly elections to be free and fair. In this regard, I have said that the President of Bangladesh invited all the stakeholders during the formation of the new commission after the expiry of the term of the previous election commission. The Chief Election Commissioner was appointed through the formation of a search committee. But some groups or individuals did not participate in this process. I have clearly said that the upcoming elections will be free and fair.<\/p>\n

He further said, We respectfully inform them everything. But this does not mean that anyone will interfere freely in our internal affairs. I repeat in this press conference, how much they (United States) will say in the internal affairs of Bangladesh is as much as the ambassadors of other countries staying in their country can do, please do not go beyond that. Our ambassadors in those countries cannot say much. We keep the doors of all ministries and departments open as hospitality to the ambassadors of other countries, do not abuse it. If you do then we have to think of something else.<\/p>\n

In response to the question to what extent it will be acceptable if a big party like BNP does not enter the elections, Shahriar said that the acceptance was in the 2014 election and will continue in the days to come.<\/p>\n

In the press conference, the state minister said that on October 11, the election for the membership of the United Nations Human Rights Council was held for the term 2023-25. Bangladesh won the historic victory by getting 160 votes out of 189 votes in this election. This result is an expression of the international community’s recognition of Bangladesh’s continued efforts and commitment to the development and protection of human rights at the national and international levels. By winning this victory by getting the highest number of votes, it has been proved that the false propaganda about the human rights situation in Bangladesh at home and abroad is false.<\/p>\n
