Tomorrow is December 14. On this day in 1971, Amtali police station in Barguna was freed from the invaders. On December 11, two groups of Mukti Bahini, led by late Habildar Hatim Ali, Afaz Uddin Biswas and Moazzem Hossain, came to Arpangasiya market via Pachakoraliya by boat from Bukabunya Casp in Barguna. On December 12, a group of Mukti Bahini under the leadership of Afaz Uddin Biswas and Nurul Islam Pasha Talukdar reached Shaheed Suhrawardy Secondary School of Kukua Union. A temporary CASP was made there under the leadership of late former MP Nizam Talukder. On the other hand, a group of freedom fighters led by Harun-or-Rashid and Abdur Rab Mia of Galachipar Mujib Bani came to that camp. The two groups adopted a plan to liberate Amtali police station.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the then Awami League president ABM Asmat Ali Akon, NAP leader Gazi Amir Hossain and school teacher Dalil Uddin Mia took the initiative of reconciliation between the Liberation Army and the police to peacefully liberate Amtali police station. At that time there was no Pak forces in Amtali police station. At the police station were OC Raees Uddin Bhuiyan, some policemen and Razakar Bahini. On the morning of December 13, they held a meeting with OC Raees Uddin Bhuiyan.<\/p>\n

The OC sent a letter through them to the camp agreeing to peacefully hand over the Amtali Police Station to the Liberation Forces. This letter was delivered to the liberation army camp by mediators. In the evening, the members of the Liberation Army stationed themselves at a place adjacent to the AK Pilot High School on the banks of the Chawra river at the western end of the police station. On the other hand, the letter sent by OC Raees Uddin Bhuiya was a trap. The Mukti Bahini police station was actually planned to be shot dead. Mukti Bahini came to know about this plan of OC. At around 8 pm Mukti and Mujib Bahini jointly fired a round of blank shots chanting “Jai Bangla”. In response, Raees Uddin and Razakar’s forces fired like rain. The war begins. A boatman (his name not available) was martyred in the overnight firing. Guerrilla fighters Harun-or-Rashid of Gallachipar’s Mujib army crossed the Ferdous Haider river and hurled a grenade near the police station wall in the early morning. The grenade exploded with a loud bang. The police and Razakar forces were mentally broken. On the other hand, the freedom fighters started coming towards the thana with a victory procession from the south-west side and the Mukti Bahini moved towards the thana from the northern side of the river. Seeing the situation, OC Rais Uddin, police and Razakar forces raised the white flag and called for surrender.<\/p>\n

On December 14, at 8 am, Mukti and Mujib Bahini jointly entered the first gate of the police station, chanting “Jai Bangla”. At this time OC Raees Uddin Bhuiyan and his forces surrendered. Later Awami League leader Afaz Uddin Biswas and Nurul Islam Pasha Talukdar OC Rais Uddin along with his accomplices were arrested. Freedom fighter Afaz Uddin Biswas formally hoisted the national flag and Amtali police station was declared a free area by the presence of the crowd singing the national anthem.<\/p>\n
