Today is National Tea Day in Bangladesh. This day is being celebrated for the second time in the country at the initiative of the Tea Board. Various programs are being celebrated on this occasion. The theme of this year’s Tea Day is ‘Tea Day Resolution, Prosperous Tea Industry’.

On the occasion of Saturday, a tea fair has been organized along with a discussion meeting at Osmani auditorium in the capital. Various organizations will display and sell tea at the fair. Apart from this, there are also discussion meetings, tea fairs and processions in the tea producing districts. Last year, National Tea Day was celebrated for the first time.

In his message, the President said that tea is well-established as a promising industry in Bangladesh. The tea industry has been deeply involved in the history and heritage of Bangladesh for over 160 years. “Once upon a time, tea was one of our exports,” he said. Later, due to increase in domestic demand, tea exports declined, but the government took various steps to increase tea production and exports. As a result, a record 96.51 million kg of tea has been produced in the country in 2021.

In her message, the Prime Minister said the present government has taken various steps to increase the export to bring back the past tradition of tea export. He said the government was encouraging large-scale orchards as well as small-scale tea plantations to increase tea production. In the last two decades, there has been a revolution in plain tea cultivation in the northern part of the country.

It is known that the journey of tea industry in the country started in 1854 with the commercial production of tea in Malnichhara tea garden of Sylhet. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the first Bengali chairman of the Tea Board. He played an important role in the development of the tea industry during his tenure as the Chairman of the Tea Board from 4 June 1956 to 23 October 1956. Under his direct direction, the Tea Research Institute at Srimangal and the office of the Tea Board at Motijheel, Dhaka were established in 1956.

National Tea Day was declared on June 4 in the cabinet meeting held on July 20, 2020 to commemorate Bangabandhu’s contribution to the tea industry and the date of joining the Tea Board.
