After 19 years, 4 people were sentenced to death for killing Humayun Azad

Dhaka University (DU) Bangla Department Writer Professor. A court has sentenced four people to death in Humayun Azad murder case. Judge Al-Mamun of Dhaka’s 4th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court pronounced the verdict on Wednesday.
The convicts were Mizanur Rahman alias Minhaj alias Shafiq, Anwar Alam alias Bhagina Shahid, Salehin alias Salahuddin and Nur Mohammad alias Sabu.
Earlier, on March 26, Judge Al-Mamun set a date for the verdict on Wednesday after presenting the arguments of the state and the defendants.
Humayun Azad was the victim of a terrorist attack in front of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission on February 26, 2004, on his way home from the Amar Ekushey Book Fair. He was stabbed with a knife and ax and seriously injured. The day after the incident, his brother Manjur Kabir filed a case of attempted murder at Ramna police station in the capital.
Humayun Azad was treated at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in the capital for 22 days and in Thailand for 48 days after the attack. He later died on August 12 of that year in Munich, Germany. After his death, the case was turned into a murder case.
On April 30, 2012, CID inspector Lutfar Rahman filed a chargesheet against five people in a murder and explosives case.
JMB Shura members Mizanur Rahman alias Minhaj alias Shafiq and Anwar Alam alias Bhagina Shahid have given confessional statements in the court. Out of 56 witnesses in the murder case, 41 testified including the investigating officer.
