In Barguna’s Taltali, local Bengalis including the tribal Rakhine people have organized a human chain and protest to demand immediate trial of all the murderers including Shahidul Doctor, the accused in the murder case of tribal (Rakhine) Notha.

This Saturday at 10 am (October 28) this human chain and protest rally was held in Tantipara market of Taltali upazila.

Jowen Joy, the plaintiff in the Notha Aung murder case, Mongchin Than, Kheching Mong and Mong Than Cho, general secretary of the Rakhine Social Development Agency, spoke at the human chain and protest rally. At this time, speakers said, Notha Aung was brutally killed for land. Even though 6 years have passed since the murder case, the CID has not given the final report till date. Meanwhile, Shahidul Doctor, one of the accused in the case, is out on bail and is threatening us in various ways.

Speakers in the gathering also said that for a long time, an influential group in the area has been harassing and torturing the members of the Rakhine community in various ways, including killing them, in order to seize the land of the Rakhine community. Rakhines’ graves and crop lands are being taken over by fraud. As a result, many destitute Rakhine tribal members quietly left the country with their families. Those who are still clinging to the patriarchy, are also in extreme insecurity. After the murder of Notha Aung, there is fear among the Rakhines.

Even though the accused in the murder case including Shahidul Doctor have been arrested, Shahidul Doctor Gongra has been released on bail and is once again trying to seize the land of the Rakhines. If the accused in the murder case are not prosecuted quickly, it is impossible to provide security for the property and life of the tribals.

It is to be noted that on June 22, 2017, Taltali Thana police recovered the strangled body of Rakhine old man Notha Ang from Namishepara of Taltali Upazila. Two days after the incident, on June 24, his relative Jowen filed a murder case at Taltali Police Station naming four people and naming some unknown accused. Later, the court gave responsibility to the CID police to investigate the case. CID police later for unknown reasons even after 6 years CID has not given full report yet. Therefore, we demand that the accused be given strict punishment by giving the police report to the court.

In this regard, CID Additional Superintendent of Police Abul Kalam Azad said, “It has been a while since the case is important. After a thorough investigation, a charge sheet will be prepared against the accused and submitted to the court soon.”
